What can we help you with?
1. Hearing & hearing damage
1.2 What does dB mean?
dB stands for decibels and indicates how loud a sound is. People can hear sound from about 0 dB to about 140 dB. Sound around 0 dB is at the threshold of hearing and is barely perceptible. As the number of decibels increases, the sound becomes louder. Noise above 140 dB is painful and can cause immediate hearing damage. Earplugs with a filter of, say, 20 dB lowers the sound level by about 20 decibels, reducing harmful noise to a more comfortable level.
1.1 How does hearing damage occur?
Sound is processed in your ear by tiny cilia in the inner ear. With loud or prolonged exposure, these become overloaded and can be damaged. This damage does not repair, making hearing damage permanent.
1.3 When are you at risk of hearing damage?
You risk hearing damage with prolonged exposure to noise above 80 dB. The louder the sound, the shorter you can safely be exposed to it. At high volumes, such as at festivals or while working with machinery, it can be harmful within a short time.
1.4 Is hearing damage repairable?
No, hearing damage is permanent. The cilia in your inner ear that are damaged do not recover. That is why it is important to protect your hearing properly.
1.5 Are high tones more damaging to your hearing than low tones?
The pitch has little or no influence on whether you suffer hearing damage. High tones produce just as much damage as low tones at equal loudness. High notes can feel more painful, though.
1.7 What is tinnitus?
Tinnitus is a persistent squeak or noise in the ear with no external sound source. It can result from exposure to loud sounds and is often a signal of hearing damage.
1.6 I already have hearing damage, does hearing protection still make sense?
Yes, definitely. Even if you have already suffered hearing damage, there are still vibrating hairs that work properly. So you have to be extra careful with these remaining cilia. All the more reason to wear earplugs!
2. Earplugs
2.1 Why should I wear earplugs?
Your hearing is burdened by noise every day, often without you even realizing it. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing damage that is permanent.
More and more people are affected, even at a young age. Hearing damage can manifest itself in, for example, a ringing in your ears. By wearing earplugs, you lower the noise level and reduce the risk of damage while staying in contact with your surroundings.
2.2 Will I continue to hear anything with earplugs in?
Yes. Pluggerz earplugs dampen the volume of sound, but do not cut you off from your surroundings. Important sounds such as speech, traffic or signals remain audible, just at a lower and more comfortable level. The idea is similar to turning down a radio: you can still hear what's going on, but without it getting too loud. This way you can continue to communicate and stay alert, while your hearing is protected from harmful noise.
2.4 Which earplugs fit me?
The right earplugs depend on your use and the situation in which you wear them.
Do you use hearing protection from time to time, e.g. during a festival, doing odd jobs or traveling? Then universal earplugs are a good choice.
Do you use earplugs more often or want the best comfort and fit? Then choose custom-made earplugs. These are made especially for your ears and fit perfectly.
In addition, choose an earplug that suits your activity, such as music, road, sleep or travel. This way, you can be sure that the attenuation and operation match your situation.
2.3 What is the difference between universal earplugs and custom-made earplugs?
Universal earplugs are ready-to-use and available in standard sizes. They come with a storage case and are reusable.
Custom-made earplugs are made especially for your ears based on an ear impression. This ensures a perfect fit and high wearing comfort. In addition, you can choose from different filters, materials and colors, tailored to your needs and use.
2.5 What cushioning do I need?
The right attenuation depends on the situation and noise level.
For lighter noise levels, lower attenuation is often sufficient. Think, for example, of travel, sleep or situations where you want mostly quiet but still want to hear something.
Are you going to a festival, concert or are you in an environment with louder noise? Then higher attenuation is recommended to protect your hearing well while music, speech or signals remain audible. For work environments with high noise levels, such as construction or industry, it is important to choose hearing protection with higher attenuation.
With custom-made earplugs, you can choose from different filters tailored to your situation. So you choose an attenuation that suits your situation, while important sounds remain audible.
2.7 How do I clean my earplugs?
Always check your universal earplugs for dirt or damage before use. Damaged earplugs do not seal as well and therefore do not protect as well.
You can easily clean your earplugs with lukewarm water and mild soap. Then let them dry thoroughly before using or storing them again. Do not use alcohol or harsh detergents; these can damage the material.
Custom-made earplugs are best cleaned with a special cleaning set, such as the Pluggerz Smart Clean set.
For weekly maintenance, use a cleaning foam. Spray this over the earplugs and let it soak in for about 15 minutes. Then rinse them with lukewarm water and let them dry thoroughly.
For a more thorough, monthly cleaning, use a cleaning tablet. Dissolve it in water and place the earplugs in the solution. Soak them for at least 15 minutes and up to 8 hours. Then remove them from the water and let them dry thoroughly.
Note: Do your earplugs have a premium or 2-in-1 filter? If so, always remove them before cleaning them. The filters are not resistant to water.
2.6 How long do earplugs last?
The lifespan of earplugs depends on the type and how you use and maintain them.
Universal earplugs are reusable and suitable for occasional use. With normal use, they last up to about 100 times. It is important to keep them clean and store them in the tube provided.
Custom-made earplugs are made especially for your ears and offer high wearing comfort and optimal protection. With proper maintenance, they last an average of 4 to 5 years. Over time, your ear canals may change, causing the fit to deteriorate. It is therefore wise to replace your earplugs after 4 to 5 years.
2.8 Which material suits me: silicone or acrylic?
With custom-made earplugs, you can choose from silicone (soft) or acrylic (hard). Both materials offer good protection, but differ in comfort, use and maintenance.
Silicone is a soft and flexible material that molds comfortably to your ear canal. As a result, these earplugs are comfortable and stay in place even when you wear them for long periods of time or move around a lot. They are also available in different colors.
Acrylic is a hard and smooth material that provides a firm and form-fitting fit. This makes the earplugs easy to put on and take off and easy to keep clean. They are hard-wearing and long-lasting, making them suitable for daily use. The smooth surface often makes them feel a bit cooler, which can be pleasant in hot (working) conditions.
2.9 Why can't I order a handle with Premium acrylic earplugs?
This is because there is not enough room on the earbuds to fit a handle. Still want a handle? Then choose a silicone version.
3. Filters
3.1 What are filters in earplugs?
A filter in an earplug ensures that harmful noise is attenuated to safe levels while important sounds remain audible.
Roughly speaking, there are two types of filters: standard filters and premium filters.
Universal earplugs come with a standard filter tailored to the use case. With custom-made earplugs, you can choose a filter that suits your situation. We provide a filter recommendation for most applications, and a hearing care professional can advise you further on this.
3.2 What is the difference between a standard filter and a premium filter?
Pluggerz standard filters attenuate sound more strongly in the high frequencies. Attenuation averages between 22 and 33 dB, depending on the material of the hearing protector and the usage situation.
Pluggerz Premium filters are designed for the best sound quality. These flat filters attenuate sound almost equally across all frequencies, keeping the sound as true to nature as possible. With Premium filters, you can choose from different attenuation levels, such as 10, 15, 20 or 25 dB, tailored to your situation.
3.3 May I remove the filter from the hearing protector?
This depends on the type of filter.
With standard filters in custom-made earplugs, it is not possible to remove the filter. Premium and 2-in-1 filters you can remove from the earplugs though. This is necessary, for example, when cleaning. Try to limit this to when it is really necessary, though, to avoid damage.
